New Butterfly Garden to Open at Hiram House Camp!

Volunteers from Holden Arboretum, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Institute for Creative Leadership, Hiram College and Hiram House Staff, armed with hundreds of plants, shovels and tons of enthusiasum, gathered at Hiram House Camp this fall to plant a new Butterfly Garden at the Double H Ranch Farmstead. Bill Henry, whose vision sparked the project, is in front.

Like a tiny seed, a great idea will germinate, take root, grow and flourish, if given lots of care and tending, and that is exactly what happened at Hiram House recently.

Dozens of Volunteers from Holden Arboretum, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Institute for Creative Leadership and Hiram College, along with Hiram House Staff, gathered at Hiram House Camp this fall to plant a new Butterfly Garden at the camp’s Double H Ranch and Farmstead.

The idea was the brainchild of former camp staffer Bill Henry.  He, along with other current and former staffers and members of the Hiram House Butterfly Garden Committe, Brent Grundke, Julie Dougherty, Marcia Mauter Stumpe, Mark Bir, and Russ Grundke, finally saw Bill’s vision spring to life.

Thanks to their efforts and the volunteer groups, plus donations of hundreds of plants by the Holden Arboretum and funding from the camp’s Lester Stumpe Memorial Fund and an anonymous donor, the project will be completed and dedicated in the spring. It will be open for use by our Summer and School Campers and Retreat Groups to learn about ecological conservation of butterfly habitats.

Hiram House Campers on “Romona’s Kids”

- Featured on TV’s 19 Action News!

Hiram House Campers were featured on Romona’s Kids” on TV’s Channel 19 Action News!

Eight-time Emmy Award winner Romona Robinson, Anchor of WOIO-TV’s 19 Action News at 5, 6 & 11 p.m. and one of the most respected and admired journalists in Northeast Ohio, visited Hiram House to film a segment of “Romona’s Kids” with our Summer Day and Overnight Camp boys and girls.

While at Hiram House, Romona talked with the children about what they learned and liked best about their stay at Camp, joined them in scaling the Alpine Climbing Tower, in singing camp songs, canoeing and other favorite outdoor activities.

“Romona’s Kids”, started by Robinson in 1990, showcases area children and positive programs for youth that make a real difference in the community.  In its 20+plus years, an estimated 3,000 children have been featured as “Romona’s Kids” and it has become an institution in Northeast Ohio.

The program aired during WOIO’s 19 Action News this summer. You can view a link to it on our Video Gallery at:

Hiram House Campers are proud to be honored as “Romona’s Kids”!
